RE: carrying 2-14ft kayaks

We carry 2 14 foot kayaks on an extended cab Silverado 2500 HD while pulling a FW. Two inch receiver up front with a Yakima dry dock and single bar over the cab. You would think your vision would be obscured but once you're in the cab your view is surprisingly unobstructed. No problems. Getting the boats off and on the rack is a little bit of a pain but I would think getting your boats in and out of the FW is no cake walk either !
Good luck and happy paddling !

Skylight Replacement - Alpenlite FW

Anyone know of good supplier for replacement skylights ? Mine sprung a leak this weekend and I found a couple of cracks in it at both of the back edges. The overall size is right at 30" X 38". That's larger than any of the sizes available at several RV supply websites I checked. Unfortunately it's an Alpenlite trailer which is a great trailer but the business went belly up this summer so checking with the manuf. won't help.
Thanks,
Bill

RE: ALPENLITE FIFTH WHEELS

Like a lot of other responders you've already heard from, Alpenlite is a top quality brand which makes for a good "used trailer" purchase. We bought a used Valhalla one year ago and have taken many trips in it. The longest was a little better than 3000 miles through New England this past summer. Everything in the trailer worked well . The layout is great and with the large windows and skylight it's extremely bright inside which we like.
Loaded for the long trip we took this summer, the trailer weighed in at 11,800 lbs. with a pin weight of about 2600 lbs.Gross weight for the trailer is 13,800.
I've recently run into some leaking problems with the skylight and the street side external storage area in the slide. Nothing that can't be fixed .
To echo what everyone has said, if you can get a good price, I'd jump on it. You won't regret it.

RE: 2500 HD Towing 12,000 lbs

I have a 2003 2500 HD D/A and tow a 31' FW which weighs 11,800 lbs. loaded for a trip.Just finished a 3,000 mile trip through New England which included lots of climbs and descents along the way. Truck performed great. The Allison was great the the D-Max has plenty of power. Never had any problems on descents, just tapped the brake a little when necessary and the Allison did most of the work. the trailer tows level with stock suspension components.Only thing I'll do is go to 265's when I buy my next set of tires to give me more capacity on the rear tires. I'm over my GVWR by about 450 lbs. but have no concerns based on my experience on this and other trips. Just need to always remember how much you have behind you and adjust accordingly.
I think you'll be fine with what you are considering. You'll also enjoy towing a FW, very smooth and no side to side sway.Just need to get used to cornering and backing which are a little different than when pulling a TT.
Have fun !

RE: Highway 81 between Harrisburg and Scranton, Pa.

Lots of good information. I've got the map out now and I'll settle on a route.
The link to DOT proved helpful and it looks like most projects in the area ended by the end of June.
Ed C., is 209 a good route to pull a trailer through? Looks like it may be a good break from the interstate and brings me right to Middletown which is where we're stopping for the night.
Thanks again to everyone.

I have a 2000 29 RK. My freshwater drain is controlled by a handle just to the left of the steps into the FW.
Enjoy your trailer !

Highway 81 between Harrisburg and Scranton, Pa.

Looking at traveling along this stretch July 8.Out of Scranton I want to pick up I84 east. I've heard of a lot of construction delays on 81. Any local knowledge of that ?
Also would 81 out of Harrisburg to 78-476 to Scranton be a good alternative. I could also take 81-78-476-80-380 to 84 as an alternative.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this routing.
Thanks,
Bill

Boston area travel

Looking for suggestions on travel in the Boston area. We'll be approaching from Connecticut on I-84. Our destination is Salisbury which is at the intersection of I-495 and I-95 in north Mass. Once there we'll be taking trains into the city but what's the best way to go around Boston.
Looks like 84 to 90 to 290 to 495 is pretty direct. Another option is once on 290 continue to 190 then to 202 and then to 495. Anyway, looking for local knowledge or recent experience in the area to provide road condition and traffic congestion input. We'll be driving about 300 miles on this day so we should be able to beat pm rush hour traffic easily.
thanks,
Bill

RE: NEED HELP FAST!!!!! Place to see in North Carolina

Agree with Carolina Cruiser. You should have no problem getting a site at the campgrounds on Lake Jordan. Look at the NC state park system website for additional information.Good roads all the way there from I-95. I would guess it's about 50 miles WNW of I-95 and I-40 . Just pick up I-40 towards Raleigh. Continue on I40 south of Raleigh, pick up US1/64 South and finally take 64 west. That will take you right to the Lake. I doubt you'll get a waterfront site unless you're lucky but there are plenty of good sites. Very wooded and the sites are good size. Just water and electric but they have dump stations.
Enjoy our state !

RE: Boston area campgrounds / activities

Thanks for all the information.
We're planning to stay at the Rusnik campground.
Poiselle, thanks for all the Boston information. I checked out the Duck Tours and that's in our plans. All the rest of it puts a lot of great resources in one place and will be really useful.

Highway 2 Maine, N.H., Vt.

I'm looking for a good route from the Bar Harbor, Me. area to upstate New York ( Adirondack Region). Looks like Highway 2 is a pretty good way to go, at least to the Montpelier, Vt. area. Then route 100 to route 17 and into New York.
I'm not familiar with the roads in Me., N.H. and Vt. Are these suitable for towing a 31 ' fiver ? My TV is a 2003 Silverado D-Max. I'm not in a big hurry and will only travel 150-200 miles per day.
Thanks,
Bill

Boston area campgrounds / activities

We're planning on spending 3 days in the Boston area this July. Does anyone have any knowledge of Rusnik campground in Salisbury which is about 40 miles north of the city. It's convenient to trains into the city and also close to the beaches. I couldn't find any reviews on the RV park reviews website. Anyone stayed there or heard about this campground ?
Also, any suggestions on things to do for 3 days in Boston ?
Thanks,
Bill

2003 Silverado D-Max battery hook up

I have a 2003 Silverado D-Max that I'm installing new batteries in. I can find nothing in the owners manual which describes what sequence the two batteries should be installed in. I know my trailer which has 4 batteries has a specific sequence to follow. Can anyone offer advice on my trucks batteries ?

RE: Tranter's Creek, Washington, N. C.

Ditto on 2 retired's post. Mostly permanent sites. No real huge difference between the overnight sites. There are several waterfront non-permanent sites as well as a number of others near the water. The road in the area of the nonpermanent sites is dirt/gravel which can be dusty if it hasn't rained recently. On balance , a nice place to stay for a while and the operators are friendly. The facilities were clean when we were there. The creek runs along the edge of the campground and offers real nice paddling if you're interested in that activity.
Enjoy !

RE: Topsail Renovations

Just got back from a week in early April.
they're moving the entrance so that once you enter you'll make a right over the pond to the right , they're building a new bridge. they're also adding some tent sites off the bike path to the beach. Also adding some additional cabins to the rear of the area they're now located in. None of the changes will increase availability of RV sites which are hard t come by now.
We had a great week ! I'm sure you will too.

Anastasia State Park, Fl.

We're interested in staying at this park for a week in early April of next year. We've never stayed there before and are looking for advice for any particular areas of the campground which are better than others. It looks like it's divided into 3 loops. We pull a 31' fifth wheel.
Any suggestions ??

LP Gas Detector alarming and Batteries discharging

Took our new to us 2000 Alpenlite out for our first extended trip last week and came up with a couple of bugs I need help with. It's equipped with a Heart Interface 2000 Watt inverter with a remote monitoring panel inside.I have 4 12 volt batteries. I noticed that after I tow the battery charge indicator is showing the lowest possible level.
they were at full charge when we left. The batteries have quickly charged up when connected to shore power but I'm wondering what could cause them to read at a low charge level. Elsewhere in the trailer there's a battery monitor indicator by the fresh/gray/black tank monitors and it reads full charge when the inverter panel shows low charge. Any thoughts ???
Also, on two occasions the LP gas detector alarm went off. Both times were at around 4 or 5 AM. It's done it once in the driveway since we returned home as well. No appliances had been in use since dinner time the evening before. We were on shore power . I could detect no LP gas odor and after opening the door, shutting off the LP tanks and fanning out the air it returned to it's green monitor state. I tested it with the test button and it tests fine. I also allowed LP gas into the trailer and it alarmed. I have tested each joint that I can find with a soap and water solution and can find no leaks. Do these things malfunction with age? This unit is about 8 years old.
Any suggestions anyone can provide on either of these issues would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
